Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines

Weight gain during pregnancy is normal and necessary for your baby's healthy development. The recommended amount depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI (Body Mass Index).

Our calculator uses guidelines from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to determine appropriate weight gain based on your pre-pregnancy BMI category.

Weight Gain by BMI Category

Underweight (BMI < 18.5)

Recommended: 28-40 lbs (12.5-18 kg)

Normal Weight (BMI 18.5-24.9)

Recommended: 25-35 lbs (11.5-16 kg)

Overweight (BMI 25-29.9)

Recommended: 15-25 lbs (7-11.5 kg)

Obese (BMI ≥ 30)

Recommended: 11-20 lbs (5-9 kg)
